Abstract
Prepn. of organophosphonic acids by reacting in a liquid oxygen-free medium comprising a satd. hydrocarbon solvent with no labile hydrogen atom under UV irradiation, a mixture of phosphorous acid or one of its derivs., an olefin and a photochemical initiator with moderate agitation. Simpler starting materials are used than in known processes e.g. photochemical oxidation of alkyl-phosphinites. Prefd. initiators are ketones at 0.1-0.5 moles/litre, the thickness of the reaction mixture being between 0.2 and 1 cm. Irradiation at 320 nm wavelength is pref. in polar solvents e.g. satd. alcohols and ethers. Pref. the H3PO3/olefin molar ratio is 20 to 500/1.
