Abstract
Boric acid is recovered from an aqs. soln by boiling to produce a vapour/liquid mixture, distilling, separating the entrained liquid from the vapour, and condensing the vapour to give a condensate contg pref. is not >10 ppm boron specif. the boric acid, contg is not >3000 ppm boron, is piped to an evaporator. Water/boric acid mist rises in a tower and passes through multiple alternate layers of plates and wadding, through uppermost wadding into a condenser. At the level of the lowest plate the soln. contg about 12% boric acid leaves the tower by exit-pipe. Used in atomic-reactor moderator systems, the concentration of moderator boric acid solns being continually adjusted by mixing water contg less than 10 ppm boron with solns contg. 12% boric acid, these solns being obtained from the effluent moderator from the reactor.
