Abstract

Processing of municipal type refuse comprises size reduction, sterilisation by exposure to radiation, pressing into bundles or bales and deposition in dumping area. The sterilisation is performed in a self contained building in which the ground refuse is made of fall between two moving belts, during which it is subjected to radiation, which may be in the form of a high energy electron, X-ray, or gamma ray beam, the preferred intensity being 0.1 MRads when 95% of all organisms in the refuse are killed.
