Abstract
An ovoid rubber envelope reinforced with textile filaments, pref. polyamide, laid to allow lateral expansion but resist longitudinal strain, which has anchorage fittings at each end. A pressurised fluid can be injected, pref. via the stem of one of the fittings. Pref. the envelope is supported near each anchorage by a rigid (moulded) cup. By pressurising the bag to expand it radially and contract it longitudinally, objects secured to the anchorages may be drawin together. Compared with conventional hydraulic or mechanical jacks, the pneumatic jack is light in wt., free from relative moving parts or seals which can wear, and has very low inertia permitting a rapid response to pressure variations.
