Abstract

Artificial, impermeable, underlying layers are produced in a subsoil by injection methods, with a view to retaining rain, spring or irrigation water. The principle of the process depends on using the permeability of the soild itself, because of its dryness, to spread a fluid chemical product which, on setting, forms an impermeable layer. Bore-holes are drilled by a vehicle with an endless track which is fitted with the drilling mechanism and with reservoirs and pumps. The number of bore-holes or injection points is regulated according to the spread of the chemical product, so as to produce a continuous impermeable sheet, Control is effected by measuring the electrical resistance or by seismographic methods. A plug is first formed at a certain distance from the end of the drill and acts as a shield; the tube is then raised and a new layer is formed over the first. Other injections follow and concentric aureoles are formed which overlap each other. Regions which are desert because of the permeability of the sub-soil can be transformed and economies made in irrigation water.
