Abstract

Aromatic trifluoromethyl cpds. pref. of formula: (where R1 and R2 are indep. H, Cl or CF3) are prepd. by treating the corresponding - CCl3 cpd. with HF (pref. at 100-170 degrees C, esp. 120-150 degrees C, and raised pressure (e.g. 40 atg.), in the presence of (pref. 0.005-1, esp. 0.05-0.5%) hexamethylenetetramine in soln., pref. in glacial AcOH. In an example, Ph.CF3 was obtained in 93% yield with, but in 70-80% yield without, the catalyst.
