Abstract

Phosphor screen with glass carrier and coating contg. Sb oxide and phosphor coating is produced by rinsing surface of carrier with soln. of Sb cpd., then drying carrier and providing with phosphor coating in usual way. After drying, coating pref. is heated in air at 400-650 degrees C, when Sb2O5 is converted to Sb2O4 as main constituent. These screens are used in low pressure Hg vapour discharge lamps. Sb oxide coating protects phosphor from attack by glass of carrier, both during manufacture and use, making it esp. suitable for use with Mn (II)-activated Zn silicate phosphor. Coating of submicroscopic Sb oxide grains does not lead to diffuse light scattering and also adhered well to carrier.
