Abstract

Metal is deposited in or on substrates, containing as active constituent, an organic cpd. chosen from (i) neutral free radicals, (ii) cationic radicals, and (iii) neutral molecules Z, derived by two electronic reduction of a cpd. containing a dicationic unit of which the formula Z++ satisfies the relation Z++ +e into/out of -e Z+ +e into/out of Z, -e (in which Z++ represents a normally stable oxidation state of the molecule in aqs. medium), by contacting the substrate with a non-electrolyte deposition soln. The active constituents include 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethylene and 2,2-bipyridylium. The metal layer may be increased in thickness by a further deposit by electrolytic methods. The process may be used for making printed circuits.
