Abstract

The sulphonated polystyrene, with a degree of substititution of >60%, carries an ammonium or lithium ion. The sulphonated polystyrene is prepared by adding 1 or more aliphatic or aromatic acids or acetic anhydride in a molar ratio of 0.2-1.0 per styrene residue, during the sulphonation of polystyrene with SO3 in a chlorinated hydrocarbon, and finally neutralising with an aqueous alkaline solution. Electrostatic recording papers or electrophotographic papers are made by impregnating or coating a paper substrate with an aqueous. solution containing the electrically conducting material.
