Abstract
Reinforced pipe made by (a) covering a mandrel with a resin impregnated mesh, (b) casting a resin-bound cement about the mandrel and (partially) curing the resin to make it self-supporting and (c) laying up an outer reinforced casing prior to completing the resin cure to form a composite pipe. Pref. the reinforcement layers are prefabricated sleeves incorporating strong axial filaments and elastic annular filaments. Casting cement incorporating an unsaturated polyester resin, styrene monomer and a mixture of CaCO3 and silica sand, and, opt. silicon carbide and clay, achieves a cheap increase in pipe wall thickness and stiffness with high strength components confined to the surface layers where the principal stresses occur.
