Abstract
In fuel cells using fuel or combustants containing CO2, such as hydrogen-air cells, the vele of carbonation of the alkaline electrolyte may be allowed to reach a certain level (C g of CO2 per l. of electrolyte) without loss of output (e.g. in KOH of 5 to 8 N, this level (C) is 22 to 66g/l). The concentration is maintained at this level by removing q/Cl/h of electrolyte, where q is the hourly quantity of CO2 (in g.) introduced, extracting the CO2 by electrodialysis and returning the electrolyte to the cell. The electrodialysis cell may be of the conventional type or a fuel cell. By decarbonating only a small fraction of the electrolyte the power consumption is kept low.
