Abstract

A tubular screw plasticizes and transports the feedstock to a shot chamber which is emptied by an injection ram reciprocating independently through the bore of the screw. Pref. the ram seals the shot chambers as it advances to prevent any back circulation up the screw. The size of the shot can be controlled by the throw of the ram or by using interchangeable seats for supporting the nozzle and limiting the ram thrust. Can be set to deliver precise shot volumes of rubbers, thermoplastic or thermosetting resins or metal alloys accurately and reproducibly coupled with screw plasticization. Requires much less power for ram reciprocation than a melt loaded screw.
