Abstract

Al or Al alloys containing up to 30 wt.% silicon is melted in a vertical electric furnace so that it passes dropwise through a flux of sodium fluoride or mixtures of sodium fluoride and sodium chloride. Calcium fluoride is used for high-silicon alloys. The phosphorous passes into the flux, giving aluminium with only 0.3-5 ppm phosphorus, with much less tendency to granulation in the solidified product.
