Abstract
Acrylic acid containing organic polymerisation retarding agents are distilled through a copper packing the distillate must be recovered in water below 20 degrees C and the aqueous solution must be led over an ion-}exchange or chelating resin to reduce the Cu-content of the purified product to less than 1 p.p.m. Purified acrylic acid is used to prepare high-molecular soliumpolyacrylates which in turn are flocculating agents used esp. in very alkaline aqueous suspensions such as in the clearing of bauxite "red muds". The distillate is preferably recovered in cold mist-deionised water below 20 degrees C. Preferred monomer concentration of distillate is 8-60%, especially 30-50%. Sulphonic acid cation-exchange resins such as those described in US. Pats. 2,366,007 and 2,471,818 or chelating resins as described in US. Pat. 2,980,607 may be used.
