Abstract

An intermediate material for the production of corundum, spinel or rutile crystals by the Verneuil technique is prepd. in a spherical, powdery form. An aqs. suspension contng. 0.5-10% of the stoichiometric quantities of hydroxide(s) are dried at 105-500 degrees C. opt. dopant ions of Ga, Cr, Co, Mn, Ni, Ti, V, Fe are added and the mixture finally dehydrated form a max. of 6 hrs. at 300-580 degrees C. The intermediate product is homogeneous does not readily agglomerate, and has low total impurity concn. The noxious gases which are produced from sulphate materials are thus eliminated and the final crystals are of excellent quality with few bubble defects.
