Abstract
Use of (2-substd.)norboranadiene-2,5 to regulate molecular wt. in polymerisation Of butadiene-1,3 yields a polymer with high cis-1,4-content. The catalyst consists of an organoaluminium cpd. and a Co or Ni cpd. The addition of the norbornadiene does not affect the rate of polymerisation or the stereoregularity of the polybutadiene. The norbornadienes are consumed rapidly in the initial stage of the polymerisation. The molecular wt. distribution of the polymer can be controlled by varying the conversion during the polymerisation. The norbornadienes may be used together with known agents for controlling molecular wt. The norbornadienes have the formula: where R is H or a substituent such as C1-12 alkyl, aryl or aralkyl.
