Abstract
The waxes are prepd. by oxidation of satd. polyolefin waxes m.w. 800-10,000 by means of oxygen at 130-190 degrees C and 1-50 kp/cm2, under conditions giving products with desirable properties of acid no. up to 50 mg. KOH/g., ester no. up to 50 mg.KOH/g. and ratio of acid to ester nos. between 0.6 and 2 to 1 (pref. between 0.9 and 1.6 to 1). Oxidation is commenced at a temp. To given by To = 160 + b.V (in which b is 0.03 to 0.05 and V is the melt viscosity at 140 degrees C in cSt.) The reaction temp. is reduced during 0.5-3 hrs. (pref. in 1-2 hrs.) by 10-50 degrees C (preF. by 20-30 degrees C) and then maintained until the required acid no. is achieved. The oxygen partial pressure may be varied in line with the melt viscosity of the starting material.
