Abstract
The sheet is heated to give it a uniform viscosity of 1017 poises. One face is rapidly heated while the other face is moderately cooled to obtain a high viscosity gradient within a surface film adjacent to the hottest face. Immediately after being rapidly heated for a short duration, the hottest face and the adjacent film are cooled. This effects high tempering before a uniform viscosity of 1017 P is reestablished throughout the sheet. The untempered face is then rapidly heated, while cooling the opposite one, to achieve a high viscosity gradient in a film adjacent to the untempered face. In both cases these gradients are produced in two different viscosity ranges. During the first the range equals 1011 P, and during the second 1011 and 1017 P. Once the viscosity distribution has been obtained, the face having the lower viscosity, together with the adjacent film, is cooled to give a uniform viscosity of 1017 P, and finally cooled to the ambient temp.
