Abstract

Purification of aqueous systems containing low concentrations of phenolic compounds, tannins and/or metals by a sorption process. N5-. Involves contacting the aqueous system with an insoluble basic polymer which contains basic or cationic groups; the polymer may be polycationic or polyampholytic. The phenolic compounds and metals can be eluted from the resin and recovered. The treatment can be applied to the purification of waste waters, such as those from the manufacture of phenols, leather tanning, paper-making or bark-stripping. It can also be applied to drinks, such as wines, syrups, liqueurs and fruit brandies. It is particularly important in the treatment of beer; beer treated in this way has less tendency to become cloudy on cooling.
