Abstract

Heat-stable polyimides are prepared by reacting at temperatures of at least 120 C, (I) urea(s) of formula H2N-R- NH-CO-NH-R n-NH2 (where n is an integer; R is a bivalent organic radical containing at least one (cyclo)aliphatic, aromatic, arylaliphatic, heterocyclic groups or several of these groups linked directly or through at least an:- alkylene, dioxyalkylene, cycloalkylene, arylene, -CO- -SO2-, -O-, -S-, -NY-CO-X-CO-NY-, -CO-NY-X-NY-CO-, -CO-O-X-O-CO-, -O-CO-X-CO-O- and -CO-NY-NY-CO- in which X is divalent (cyclo) alkylene or arylene, Y and Y' are (cyclo)alkyl or aryl), with, (II) a compound containing two pairs of carbonyl groups, the groups in each pair being linked to the same oxygen atom and also to the same carbon atom or to different carbon atoms in the same radical but such that the groups are separated at most by 3 C. Specifically (II) is (where R' contains at least 2C and is from the groups listed for R. The polymers have properties intermediates between those of polyureas and polyimides. For good heat stability the ratio of urea units to imide units should be less than 9:1.
