Abstract
Ion exchangers are usually charged, washed in the opposite direction, purified and regenerated in the same apparatus. Nevertheless it is often advantageous, and even necessary, to separate the charging or filling operation from the purification and regeneration processes; in this case the ion exchanger is transferred from the service apparatus into a different recipient provided for regeneration, purification and washing in the reverse direction. The resin is transferred to the regeneration recipient, in the absence of pressure, and back again by using a liquid with a density higher than that of the exchanger resin, as the transfer medium; any such liquid may be used provided that it does not produce an undesirable reaction with the resinous matter. The process is used where the exchange resin is employed for treating a liquid which itself has a density higher than that of the resin, for example, in the decolouring of glycerol, glycol, gelatines and pectins and particularly in the treatment of sugar solution.
