Abstract

Production of new N'-subst. N-acyl-pyrazolidine cpds. by reacting with loss of H2O, (A) an aldehyde or a reactive functional deriv. thereof with (B) an N'-monosubst. N-acyl-hydrazine and (C) an olefin the C=C double bond of which is comprised in a strained ring system and/or is conjugated with at least one further multiple bond. A large number of specific products are claimed per se. Intermediates, esp. for pharmaceuticals. Suitable aldehyde components include HCHO, PhCHO and 4-nitrobenzaldehyde; an example of an aldehyde reactive functional deriv. is EtOOCC A variety of subst. hydrazine starting materials can be used. Suitable olefinic starting materials include norbornene, benzo-norbornadiene, 1,4-dihydro-1,4-epoxynaphthalene, styrene, ethyl acrylate, ethyl cinnamate, 1,1-diphenylethylene, 1,2-dihydronaphthalene, acrylonitrile and indene. The process can be carried out in a number of ways. For example, the 3 components are mixed (either using equimolar proportions thereof in an inert solvent which permits azeotropic distillation of H2O, or using an excess of the aldehyde or olefin component to act as solvent) and refluxed 1-10 hrs., the condensate being passed through a water separator or over a solid drying agent. In one variant procedure, the aldehyde component is first reacted with the subst. hydrazine (e.g. by heating to ca 50 deg. in an inert solvent) and the resulting intermediate (optionally after isolation and purification) reacted with the olefinic component under the above water-separating conditions. In another variant procedure, the aldehyde component is reacted with the subst. hydrazine under dehydrating conditions and the resulting intermediate (without isolation) reacted with the olefinic component at elevated temp.
