Abstract

Porous glass of low specific gravity can withstand impacts greater than glass. The invention provides a porous glass with density less than 1.0 with a glaze of about 0.6 mm thickness such that the layer in contact with the glaze has a density greater than 0.4 gms/cc. The glaze is pref. provided without a gas generator. The strength is obtained by freezing the glass rapidly to create an internal tension.
