Abstract

Extn. of tabersonine (I) from the seeds of Voacanga spp. The seeds are harvested at about maturity, freed from extraneous matter, dried, and ground to a fine powder. This is extd. successively with solvents having decreasing selectivity for non-alkaloidal, fatty and other unwanted substances, e.g (1) a defatting solvent such as petrol or CCl4, (2) ethyl ether, (3) acid ethanol. Solvent exts. (1) and (2) are extd. with acid (2% HCl, 5% AcOH or 1% H2SO4) and the exts. combined with (3) after removal of alc; the mixture is basified with NH4OH or carbonate and the total bases (1.8-2.2% of initial material) extd. with an org. solvent; these contain 75-85% of (I), purified as its HCl salt. The structure of (I) resembles that of the Vinca alkaloids.
