Abstract

Prodn. of L-isoleucine by cultivating an L-isoleucine-producing strain from the genus Corynebacterium in a culture medium contng. alpha-hydroxybutyric acid, and recovering the accumulated L-isoleucine from the culture medium. Nutrient additive for foods and feedstuffs for humans and animals. The pref. microorganism is C. glutamicum ATCC 21193. The nutrient medium contains alpha-hydroxybutyric acid (or a non-toxic salt thereof) and suitable amounts of conventional additives. The fermentation is carried out under aerobic conditions at 20-40 deg. C, pref. at neutral pH, for 2-5 days. Microbial cells are filtered off and L-isoleucine isolated from the filtrate, e.g. using a cation-exchange resin.
