Abstract

Rapid and repetitive hot pressing of refractory materials under controlled conditions in the absence of oxygen to their maximum theoretical density. The hard, strong, high temp. resistant materials produced by the process have many uses, e.g. as cutting tool tips, dies, drills, gauge blocks, valve seats, etc. The hot pressing apparatus comprises: (a) a reuseable refractory shell for containing refractory material; (b) pistons slideably fitted within the shell; (c) a housing containing an atmosphere free from oxygen; (d) a mechanism for introducing and conveying the shell and pistons within the housing; (e) a heated susceptor within the housing and having a cavity in which the shell is positioned for heat transfer; (f) a device for repetitively introducing and positioning the shell and pistons within the cavity and applying compacting pressure to the pistons, and then removing the shell and pistons from the cavity; (g) mechanisms for cooling the shells and the compacted materials and for removing the shells from the housing.
