Abstract

Rubber belting incorporating reinforcement comprises a cable laid helically to form the neutral axis of the final belt, these longitudinal cables being pref. sandwiched by short cables laid transverse and enclosed by cross ply fabrics to control the stiffness of the structure. These core elements are pref. enclosed by (partially cured) rubber with the helical core cables suspended under tension between a pair of rolls with one run passing through a curing oven. Lay-up of the unvulcanised rubber components in tension (supported by the reinforcing cables) avoids localised stresses and contration experienced with slack lay-up, esp. in large belts such as vehicle tracks with a 15 m loop.
