Abstract

A method of injection moulding a fibre reinforced synthetic resin article comprises the discharging of short length fibres in a continuous and uniform stream from a vibrated bowl and mixing the stream with a continuous and uniform stream of heat plasticizable resin powder fed from a second feed bowl, passing the mixture to a plasticizer from which it is injected into a mould. In Fig. 2 glass fibres are fed to a trough 46 of a vibrated bowl 42 and fall as a stream into a shoot 48 where they mix with a stream of polystyrene powder fed from a trough 60 of a vibratory bowl 56, and the mixture passes to an inlet 50 of a plasticizer 52. In a modification the two materials are fed from inner and outer vibrated bowls and pass upwardly therefrom along helical paths to separate outlets from which they flow as streams to an inclined shoot and from which the material falls to a plasticizer inlet. The fibres may alternatively be of nylon, rayon, sisal, hemp or jute, and the powder of polyurethane, polypropylene, polyesters, nylon, or styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer.
