Abstract

Two hepatitis C virus shell proteins (E1 and E2) are expressed without sialylation. Recombinant expression of these proteins in lower eukaryotes or in mammalian cells in which a terminal glycosylation has been prevented yields, as the result, recombinant proteins which are similar to the natural HCV glycoproteins. By means of being isolated using GNA lectin affinity, the E1 and E2 proteins are aggregated into virus-like particles. Cells possessing a mannose receptor or an asialoglycoprotein receptor can be infected with HCV and these cells function as carriers when culturing the virus.
