The invention relates to a process for producing a nickel free, copper-based metal alloy containing manganese and zinc, to a metal alloy which has been produced by means of the process, and to the use of the metal alloy in objects which call for nickel-free material. According to the invention, 0.006-0.15% by weight of phosphorus is added to a copper-based metal alloy, which contains 9-15% by weight of manganese and 15-22% by weight of zinc and customary impurities and in which the sum of the contents of manganese and zinc amounts to at most 32% by weight, for the purpose of lowering the casting temperature of the metal alloy and improving its casting properties.
