Abstract

The operating method requires a sensor (10) for detecting at least one operating parameter of the engine in the partial load range, for determining the start point of the fuel injection and the opening and/or closing points of the engine inlet and outlet valves (4,5), to maintain a constant compression pressure in the combustion chamber in the upper load range. The engine can be operated with an emulsion of fuel and water, with the ratio of fuel to water varied in dependence on the detected engine parameter(s).
