Abstract

A system and a process are described, by which the strength of paper or some other sheet material can be determined. The process is non-destructive and can be used to make "on-line" measurements simultaneously with, for example, paper manufacture. A detector measures the peripheral quality of the sheet, which is related to the modulus of elasticity and flexural rigidity of the sheet material, and generates electric signals corresponding to these. A computer calculates a strength value for the sheet material on the basis of the electric signals. This calculated strength value can be compared with "Mullen" and other standardized strength tests. <IMAGE>
