The invention relates to a process for preparing optically active α-arylalkanecarboxylic acids of the formula Ar-CHR-COOH, in which Ar is 6-alkoxynaphthyl, which can be substituted in the 5 position by halogen, or 4-(alkyl- or halogen)phenyl and R is alkyl. In this process, a ketal of the formula (I) <IMAGE> in which Ar and R are the same as above, R1 and R2 are, independently, OH, OR3 or N(R3)2, in which R3 is alkyl, and X is Cl, Br, I, OH, alkanoyloxy or alkylsulphonyloxy, and the carbon atoms which are marked with an asterisk are both either in the R or the S configuration, is prepared by ketalising a L(+)- or D(-)- tartaric acid of the formula R1-CO-CHOH-CHOH-CO-R2 or a derivative thereof, and the ketal of the formula (I) is rearranged in two steps to yield the abovementioned α-arylalkanecarboxylic acid.
