Abstract

The invention relates to crystalline aluminium phosphate compositions with three-dimensional, microporous crystal structures, which chemical composition expressed as molar ratio is Al2O3 : 1.0 + 0.2 P2O5. Adsorption data show that the compositions can be used as molecular sieves when they have intracrystalline micropores which can admit molecules with kinetic diameters of from 3 to 14 A. These compositions have an X-ray diffraction pattern characterized by having the d spacings shown in Table 1 when measured at a two theta which is less than about 40 degrees using copper K alpha radiation. The composition can also include a structure-aligning agent. Production takes place by mixing an aluminium source, a phosphorus source and 10-100 mol water per mol Al2O3 to form a precursor mixture, mixing the precursor mixture with the structure-aligning agent to form a reaction mixture, and converting the reaction mixture under such conditions that an aluminium phosphate composition with the given X-ray diffraction pattern is formed. Metal-substituted aluminium phosphate compositions which have an X-ray diffraction pattern with the same characteristic d spacings can also be produced by also incorporating oxides of one or more metals with the oxide lattice. Metals which are suitable for substitution include silicon, magnesium, zinc, tin, zirconium, titanium, cobalt and mixtures thereof.
