Abstract

An extrusion device for foam and a process for the use of a horizontal vacuum chamber 10 provided with a partition 11 and having at the other end an extrusion nozzle 16, which, when the partition is shut, is located inside the vacuum chamber. At the opposite end of the chamber there is a liquid barrier, preferably for water, through which the extruded material passes from the chamber to the open air. The barrier produces a dam 30, the surface of which within the chamber is higher than the surface 31 outside the chamber. The higher surface of the dam is formed between a damming plate 20 and a sealing plate 12, of which the sealing plate constitutes the opposite end of the chamber. In the sealing plate there is a window 34 which can be adjusted to size and through which the extruded material runs, controlled by a conveyor 43, obliquely downwards in the dam, subsequently to emerge, via the sealing plate and the dam, with an upwardly bent section of large radius. The height of the liquid level in the chamber is regulated by the circulation of liquid 50,51 from the higher level of the inner dam of the chamber to the lower level of the dam round about the chamber, the circulated quantity of water having an inversely proportional relationship to the absolute pressure of the vacuum chamber. <IMAGE>
