Abstract

The invention relates to a process for preparing amphotericin B crystals directly from the fermentation broth. The process comprises culturing the Streptomyces nodosus strain in a fermentation broth which is essentially free of amphotericin B solvent until a powerful mould-counteracting activity has been imparted to the solution, heating the broth to approx. 70-130 degree C for at least 10 minutes in order to form the amphotericin B crystals and recovering the amphotericin B crystals in large quantities from the broth. The process includes a direct microbial cell autolysis step for inducing the crystal formation, and the crystals can readily be separated without using an extraction technique which is expensive in solvents.
