Abstract

The invention relates to a new process for the manufacture of a fibre web in a paper manufacturing process, the object of which is to improve the retention and in particular the opacity, in which process 1) an aqueous suspension of fibres is produced, 2) an aqueous suspension of mineral filler and binder is produced, in which the filler/binder mixture is pre- flocculated by means of a cationic flocculent, 3) the pre-flocculated aqueous suspension of the filler/binder mixture is introduced into the inlet pipes of the paper machine and upstream of its head box in the aqueous suspension of the fibres so that i. the mean diameter of the flakes of the filler/binder mixture that is introduced into the said fibre suspension is between 0.01 and 0.3 mm and ii. the contact time between the said filler/binder mixture and the fibres in the suspension obtained is between 10 and 60 seconds, 4) a cationic flocculent is introduced into the aqueous suspension of fibre/filler/binder mixture obtained in stage 3) upstream of the head box, so that the contact time between the said flocculent and the said fibre/filler/binder mixture is shorter than 45 seconds; and 5) the aqueous suspension obtained is introduced into the head box and a web is formed on the paper machine, which is pressed and dried.
