Abstract

The invention relates to holographic optical elements which operate on a plurality of wavelengths and with reduced distortions and a process for production thereof. The achromatic, holographic elements are produced by the use of an essentially conventional apparatus and method based upon the phenomenon that any two reflection wavelengths are diffracted at the same angle if the mutual relationship between their construction angles is inversely proportional to the relationship between their sines. In the case of holographic lenses, the diffracted wavelengths are brought moreover to a common focus if the mutual relationship between the focuses during the construction is inversely proportional to the relationship between the sines of their construction angles. Used in connection with a thick reproduction medium, the method produces an optical element with a symmetrical pair of outgoing rays having two independent focuses. <IMAGE>
