Abstract

The valley gutter (9) of the invention has folded upstand ends to be mounted in a roof valley construction. The profile of the valley gutter (9) comprises a middle section (9a) that forms a valley, the ends of the valley gutter having an upstand section (9c), a fold that forms a backwards directing shoulder section (9d) at the top of the upstand section (9c), and a distal end section. The invention is also concerned with a roof valley construction comprising such a valley gutter (9). The roof valley construction also comprises, on both sides of the valley, a roof covering (10), a batten (2) under the roof covering (10), at least one valley board (1), an underlay (4), a side rafter (3), and further comprising a valley rafter (3) between the side rafters (3). The method of the invention for constructing such a roof valley construction comprises the steps of mounting first rafter boards (3) at a site for the valley gutter (9) of the invention to be placed, mounting an underlay (4) above the rafters, mounting boards at a site for the valley gutter (9) of the invention to be placed, mounting valley boards (1) at the sides of the roof valley in the direction of the roof valley, mounting battens (2) above the valley boards, by leaving a free place for the valley gutter (9) at the inside ends of the valley boards (9), cutting constructions at the valley in the direction of the valley, inserting the valley gutter (9) between the battens (2) with the upstand sections (9c) facing the sides of the battens (2), and mounting the roof covering (10).

Description

A VALLEY GUTTER, A ROOF VALLEY CONSTRUCTION COMPRISING THE VALLEY GUTTER, AND A METHOD FOR MOUNTING A ROOF VALLEY CONSTRUCTION
TECHNICAL FIELD The invention is concerned with a valley gutter, a roof valley construction comprising the valley gutter and a method for mounting the roof valley construction.
BACKGROUND A roof valley is formed where two roof slopes of a building or house meet. Roof valleys are V-shaped metal channels that run up and down the folds of a roof.
One or more roof valleys can be found in roofs of e.g. metal sheets and tiles. Independently of the cover material used for the roofs, the construction of the roof valley is demanding at both the original constructing and renovating.
The roof is exposed to hard stress, especially in Nordic conditions with much rainwater, snow, temperature variation, wind and sunshine. An incorrect way of leading the water off is a common reason to moisture damages. The highest risk for water leakage is at the roof valley.
Water collects in the valley to flow off the roof. The choice of valley installation method is critical because, when improperly installed, valleys are risks for serious leaks.
A valley gutter is placed in the inside V-formed roof valleys to lead water away from the < roof and protect other components from water.

A boarding is typically built over the whole length and width of the valley gutter to ensure a sufficient clamping surface and ventilation for the valley gutter. Usually, the roof covering has to be designed and cut into conformity to the valley gutter. The valley gutter is mostly done of a smooth metal sheet in one piece or is made of two or three pieces. Most often, the valley gutter is interlaced under the rooftop. A sufficient measure of interlace is determined and suitable sealants are selected. The valley gutter is cut so that it has wings that extend over the eaves line and the wings are folded under the eaves list. The roof covering extends all the way to the roof valley. The upper end of the valley gutter is folded at the purlin and the lower end against the vertical joint of the roof cover sheet and is folded under the eaves list at the site of that. The sealant is extruded into the roof cover sheet that is under the valley cutter. The edge parts of the valley gutter are sealed by using sealant before mounting of the — roof tiles or sheets. Special additional sheets can be used for the lower and upper ends of the roof valley depending on the construction of the roof valley. The bottom of the roof valley is boarded, and a V-formed valley gutter sheet is mounted above before the roof covering. Conventionally, the valley gutters are interlaced over a distance of at least 150mm so that the edge of the upper valley gutter is uppermost. The joints are tightened with an elastic sealant. The valley sheet is extended under the purlin sheet. Valley gutters having a fold that are used under metal sheet roof coverings are guite broad. Their surface become smoother along with the underlay.

LO N The roof covering can not be fastened through the valley gutter and therefore, a problem N 30 arises, if the valley gutter is very broad. Then the roof covering sheet can not be fastened at the valley gutter and its edge will be exposed to wind and ice.
Another problem with valley gutters of prior art is that the joining of two pieces of valley gutters is difficult and the joints do not fit into eachother. The object of the invention is to improve the roof valley construction for avoiding the problems of prior art.
SUMMARY The valley gutter of the invention has folded upstand ends to be mounted in a roof valley construction. The profile of the valley gutter comprises a middle section that forms a valley, the ends of the valley gutter having an upstand section, a fold that forms a backwards directing shoulder section at the top of the upstand section, and a distal end section. The invention is also concerned with a roof valley construction comprising such a valley gutter. The roof valley construction also comprises, on both sides of the valley, a roof covering, a batten under the roof covering, at least one valley board, an underlay, a side rafter, and further comprising a valley rafter between the side rafters. The method of the invention for constructing such a roof valley construction comprises the steps of mounting first rafter boards at a site for the valley gutter of the invention to be placed, mounting an underlay above the rafters, mounting boards at a site for the valley gutter of the invention to be placed, mounting valley boards at the sides of the roof valley in the direction of the roof valley, mounting battens above the valley boards, by leaving a free place for the valley gutter at the inside ends of the valley boards, cutting constructions at the valley in the direction of the valley, inserting the valley gutter between N the battens with the upstand sections facing the sides of the battens, and mounting the N roof covering.

The valley gutter can be placed between the battens with the upstand sections facing the sides of the battens. Preferably, it is placed between the battens and above the underlay so that there is a space under the valley gutter for ventilation. The ends of the middle section of the valley gutter lies above the valley boards over a distance. The angled folds of the middle section are for example positioned at the place wherein the valley gutter meets the valley board at the corners of the valley boards. The backwards directing shoulder section extends above the ends of the middle section of the valley gutter, which lie above the valley boards over a distance. Furthermore, the distal end sections of the valley gutter extend above the battens. The valley gutter is fastened to the valley board by means of a screw at its distal end distal end at a level higher than the capillary breaks and after those. Especially, when the roof valley construction is intended for a building, the roof covering consisting of a standing seal sheet with an overhang beyond the side of the building, whereby by the edge of the roof covering is folded around and under the backwards directing shoulder section. A fast water flow along one of the sloping surfaces of the roof is prevented to flow under the other surface and is flowing back to the roof valley instead. In conventional solutions, 5 rubber seals are necessary to prevent this.
The invention enables a narrower valley gutter than those of prior art and thus material savings are achieved.
Stiffeners are preferably used under the bottom of the valley gutter to prevent its bending. When more than one valley gutter piece is used, the pieces are placed to be pressed tightly to each other by having curved portions in the upstand section and optionally at other places, such as close to the ends of the middle section.
At the engaging, the upstand section at the end of a valley gutter piece to be joined with an other one is straightened by some kind of impact tool, such as a gavel or then by pilers or tongs. Preferably also the curve at the middle section of the valley gutter is straightened over the same distance at the end of the valley gutter. The end of an other valley gutter piece can thus be placed inside the straightened end and both the ends can be further straightened in order to achieve a tight join between two valley gutter pieces. In this way, two valley gutter pieces can be put inside each other for joining them together. Sealant can be used at the joints. Valley gutters up to ca 2,5 - 8 m are often in one piece.
Conventionally, cutting of the roof covering sheets, especially in connection with steel sheets is difficult. The cut has to be straight and the cutting surface will be exposed for rusting being, however, a mere esthetic problem. In the invention, when a smooth roof N covering of steel sheets is used, the cutting is performed over the edge of the roof and . the overhang is folded inwards.
O I 25 In tile roof coverings, if there is a bay window on the roof, the upper side of the valley I gutter of the invention, can be flattened with a gavel in a controlled way since it is pre- N bent and no separate components are needed.
O 5 So, the valley gutter of the invention can be used in roof valleys of buildings but also at
QA S other corresponding joints, such as in connection with different bay and bow windows on walls and roofs. Such roofs are called dormer roofs.
In the following, the invention is described by means of an example embodiment by referring to figures. The invention is not restricted to the details of this embodiment.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION The roof covering of a roof is the topmost layer in a roof. The invention can be used in connection with different types of roof coverings, such as for profiled or corrugated metal sheet coverings or for tile coverings. There has to be a compact boarding correctly installed under the roof covering in order to achieve a sufficient strength for the roof valley. Such a compact boarding is realized by roofing battens or battenings and they are used to provide the fixing point for roofing materials such as metal sheets or tiles. The spacing of the battens on its support structures, such as on the trusses, rafters or valley boards, depend on the type of roof covering material and are applied horizontally like purlins. In metal roofing, the battens are also used to secure the sheets. Some roofs may use a grid of battens in both o directions, known as a counter-batten system, which improves ventilation. Rafters are O sloped structural members such as wooden beams that extend from the ridge or hip to N the wall plate, downslope perimeter or eave, and that are designed to support the roof S and its associated loads. = a 25 The eaves are the edges of the roof which overhang the face of a wall and, normally, O project beyond the side of a building.
LO N In addition, there are one or more underlays at the roof valley partly for protecting other
N roof components from possible leaking water. A typical underlay is placed under the valley gutter. The resting details of the constructions vary with respect to additional components, such as felts, isolating layers or e.g. sound seal bands.
The valley bottom of the invention is usually at approximately the same level as the batter inthe lower end of the inclined sloping roof surface. preferably, there are ventilation holes between the boards of the roof valley and then there is an eaves list in the corner of the roof valley. The valley gutter is fastened with nails or fastening screws and interlaced in a required extent under the roof covering.
Figure 1 presents a cross-section of an example of a roof valley construction of the invention including the inventive valley gutter 9.
The roof valley construction of figure 1 further comprises on both sides of the V-formed valley, a roof covering 10 as the top layer, a batten 2 under the roof covering 10, at least one valley board 1, a side rafter 3, and a valley rafter 7 between the side rafters 3.
In figure 1, there is an underlay 4 between the valley boards and it is hanging freely at the section under the middle section 9a (see figure 3) of the valley gutter 9. The underlay works as a security for the valley gutter to catch water.
The details of the roof construction, wherein the valley gutter of the invention can be used, can vary but especially the position of the underlay 4c can vary. In some embodiments, there can be a boarding under the underlay and preferably a felt above the boarding. The underlay 4 may thus. be supported under the middle section of the valley gutter 9.
The valley gutter, in turn, has to have free space beneath it under side for ventilation. N There are upstands 9b (see figure 3) on both sides of the valley gutter 9 over a section of . the valley gutter 9, which extend almost full height to the underside of the roof covering = 25 10. The valley gutter 9 is mounted in the roof valley construction between the battens 2, N the sides of the battens 2 facing the upstand sections 9b.
I a N The valley gutter 9 comprises inventive sections described in the following.
O 5 The profile of the valley gutter 9 comprises a middle section 9a forming a valley.

O N The ends of the middle section 9b lies, over a distance, indirectly or directly on support constructions, such as on valley boards 1 as in figure 1.
The sections following the middle section 9a, at the ends of the valley gutter 9, further comprising said upstand sections 9c (see figure 3) on both sides.
The valley gutter has a fold that forms a backwards directing shoulder section 9d (see figure 3) at the top of said upstand section 9c.
Thus, the fold forms an angle of approximately 180° by then continuing as a distal end section 9e (see figure 3). The backwards directing shoulder section 9d extends above the ends of the middle section 9a of the valley gutter 9, which lies above the valley boards 1 over a distance.
The idea of the backwards directing shoulder is that water flowing to the height of the upstand flows back to the valley gutter instead of flowing over the edges.
The distal end sections 9e of the valley gutter extend above the battens 2 and below the roof covering 10 being interlaced between the battens 2 and the roof covering 10. The distal end sections 9e are crooked at least once for forming capillary breaks 6 (see figure 2) for water coming under the valley gutter 9. The form is not essential, there can e.g. be V-formed elevations or half-circle formed curved elevations The capillary breaks prevent water from spreading out over the surfaces of the roof covering and the battens.
The main part of the water is collected to flow on the valley gutter to the eaves.
The underlay 4 is a security and might also receive water.
The backwards directed shoulder section 9d causes water to flow back to the valley gutter.
As an example, the upstand section 9c is about 32 mm, the whole middle section 9a being about 350 mm, whereby one side of the middle section is 175 mm.
The sum of the backwards directing shoulder section 9d at the top of said upstand section 9c and the distal end section 9e is about 85 mm.
The dimensions can vary in accordance with other o components of the building.
The total length of the backwards directing shoulder section S 9d and the distal end section 9e can be e.g. s 40 — 60%, preferably about 50% of the half 5 25 length of the whole middle section 9a, the total length of the backwards directing shoulder a, section 9d can be e.g. 20 — 40%, preferably about 30% of the distal end section 9e, and E the length of the upstand section 9c is about 20% of the of the half length of the whole o middle section 9a. 2 The ends of the middle section 9a of the valley gutter lies above the valley boards 1 over N 30 a distance, such as e.g. 20 — 70 % of the distal end section.
The distal end sections 9e extend essentially parallel with the middle section 9a of the valley gutter 9. The middle section 9a preferably has angled folds 8 close to its ends. The angled folds 8 of the middle section are positioned at the place wherein the valley gutter meets the valley board at the corners of the valley boards. Furthermore, each upstand section 9c might have an angled fold 11 as well.
The valley gutter 9 is fastened to the valley board 1 by means of a screw 12 at its distal distal end at a level higher than the capillary breaks and after those.
Furthermore, the valley gutter 9 is usually protected by a snow barrier (not shown).
In a preferable embodiment of the invention, the roof valley construction is intended for a building, in which the roof covering 10 consists of a smooth roofing sheet (either jointed at the factory or in the classic way to be water tight), such as a standing seam sheet. with an overhang beyond the side of the building, whereby by the edge of the roof covering 10 is folded around and under the backwards directing shoulder section.
Figure 2 is a detailed view of a part of figure 1. The capillary breaks have reference number 6. The middle section 9a has angled folds 8 close to its ends. The valley gutter 9 is fastened to the valley board 1 by means of a screw at its distal end distal end at a level higher than the capillary breaks and after those.

Claims (21)

1. Valley gutter (9) with folded upstand ends to be mounted in a roof valley construction, the profile of the valley gutter comprising a middle section (9a) forming a valley, the ends of the valley gutter having an upstand section (9c), a fold that forms a backwards directing shoulder section (9d) at the top of the upstand section (9c), and a distal end section (9e).
2. Valley gutter of claim 1, wherein the distal end section (9e) extends essentially parallel with the middle section (9a) of the valley gutter.
3. Valley gutter of claim 1, wherein the total length of the backwards directing shoulder section (9d) and the distal end section (9e) is 40 — 60%, preferably about 50% of the half length of the whole middle section (9a).
4. Valley gutter of claim 1, wherein the total length of the backwards directing shoulder section (9d) is 20 — 40%, preferably about 30% of the distal end section (9e).
5. Valley gutter of claim 1, wherein the length of the upstand section (9c) is about 20% of the of the half length of the whole middle section (9a).
6. Valley gutter of claim 1, wherein the distal end sections (9e) are crooked at least once for forming on e or more capillary breaks (6).

12. Roofvalley construction of any of claims 9 - 11, wherein the ends of the middle section (9a) of the valley gutter (9) lies above the valley boards (1) over a distance.
13. Roof valley construction of any of claims 9 — 11, wherein the angled folds (8) of the middle section are positioned at the place wherein the valley gutter (9) meets the valley board (1) at the corners of the valley boards (1).
14. Roof valley construction of any of claims 9 - 13, wherein the backwards directing shoulder section (9d) extends above the ends of the middle section (9a) of the valley gutter (9), which lie above the valley boards (9) over a distance, the length of the backwards directing shoulder section (9d) preferably being 20 — 100 %, preferably 40 — 60% of said distance.
15. Roof valley construction of any of claims 9 - 14, wherein the distal end sections (9e) of the valley gutter (9) extend above the battens (2).
16. Roof valley construction of any of claims 9 - 15, wherein the valley gutter (9) is 2 fastened to the valley board (1) by means of a screw at the end of its distal end section N (9e) at a level higher than the capillary breaks (6) and after those. 5 3 30

Method of mounting a roof valley construction of any of claims 9 — 18, comprising the steps of a) mounting first rafter boards (3) at a site for the valley gutter of claims 1 — 8 to be placed, b) mounting an underlay (4) above the rafters (3), c) optionally, mounting boards at a site for the valley gutter of claims 1 — 8 to be placed, d) mounting valley boards (1) at the sides of the roof valley in the direction of the roof valley, e) mounting battens (2) above the valley boards (1), by leaving a free place for the valley gutter (9) at the inside ends of the valley boards (1), f) cutting constructions at the valley in the direction of the valley, g) inserting the valley gutter (9) between the battens with the upstand sections (9c) facing the sides of the battens (2), h) mounting the roof covering (10).
20. Method of claim 19, wherein the roof valley construction is intended for a building, the roof covering (10) consisting of a standing seal sheet with an overhang beyond the side of the building, whereby the edge of the roof covering (10) is folded around and under the backwards directing shoulder section (9d).
21. Method of any of 19 or 20, wherein the valley gutter (9) is protected by a snow barrier.
