Abstract

In a method for coating an electrically conductive substrate, the latter is immersed into an aqueous bath containing a binder of synthetic resin neutralized at least partially by acids and containing cationic amino and/or hydroxyl groups, as well as a mixture of cross-linking agents, pigments, fillers, anti-corrosion agents, additives for the lacquer, optionally catalysts, and up to 15% by weight of the total weight of the coat of an organic solvent. The substrate receives as cathode a direct current thereby causing the precipitation of a film on the substrate. The substrate is removed from the bath and the film is hardened by firing. The mixture of cross-linking agents contains at least two cross linkers based on activated esters and/or containing polyisocyanates blocked by different blocking agents. Said cross-linkers have a different reactivity, in other words, upon heating, their cross-linking reaction starts at temperatures which differ by at least 10<o>C. The cross-linker which reacts the first represents between 15 and 60 moles per cent of the mixture. The first coating layer is rinsed and, before firing, one or a plurality of additional cathodic coatings are applied. The coating layers are rinsed one after the other, whereafter they are hardened all together.
