The optical fibres, for use in electrical cables, with length equal to that of the protective material inside which they are tightly confined, are made by (a) coating the filaments with a first layer of thermosetting material by passing through a die, followed by cross-linking; (b) applying a second coating of elastomeric amterial applying a second coating of elastomeric material by passing through a second die; and (C) forming a third layer of thermoplastic resin by passing through a third die. The 3 layers have different moduli of elasticity the intermediate having lower modulus than the adjacent layers and below 1kg/kq.cm.
