Abstract
In a fuel injection device a conventional injection valve is connected by way of a pressure line to an injection pump. The pump pressure chamber of the latter is connected to the fuel receiving chamber by way of at least one intake bore and at least one outlet bore, and, during the delivery stroke, the pump piston first of all, with its upper control edge determining the start of injection, closes off the intake bore cross section, then the outlet bore cross section, and later with its bottom control edge re-opens the intake bore cross section in order to terminate the injection. In addition the mouth cross-sectional area of each outlet bore on the fuel receiving chamber side can be adjusted to any value between "fully open" and "fully closed" by variable covering by means of the closure member of a control slide valve. The said control slide valve is connected to an adjusting device and can be actuated by means of this in such a way that in relation to the injection characteristic which exists with the mouth cross section closed, by opening and deliberate adjustment of the effective mouth cross-sectional area of the outlet bore the quantity of fuel flowing out of the pump pressure chamber into the fuel receiving chamber during the delivery stroke of the pump piston and thereby the pressure build-up in the pump pressure chamber can be purposely influenced in order to retard the start of injection with or without any division of the injection into a pre-injection and a main injection.
