Abstract
Alkyl 2-(4(5)-benzoyl) benzimidazoly carbamates of formula (I), in which R is lower alkyl, are made by (a) treatment of a N-alkoxycarbonyl 2-nitro carbanilonitrile with benzoyl chloride or benzoic anhydride in presence of an anhydrous metal halide as catalyst, in aprotic solvent at -20 deg.C up to b.pt., to obtain the 4-benzoyl cpd.; (b) hydrogenating in presence of Pd or Pt on carbon, or Raney Ni, in a lower alcohol solvent at pressure between normal and 10 atmos. to obtain a cpd. of formula (II); and (c) isomerising by heating in pyridine.
