Abstract

Automatic welding or cutting of the junction between a main pipe (1) and a branch pipe (2). Main pipe is placed on a support which allows the pipe assembly to be pivotted about a first axis (XX1) coincident with the main pipe axis and about a second axis (YY1), perpendicular to the first axis, by means of two servomotors (11,18), each having a servo loop. A travelling gantry (4) passes over the support and carries a mobile welding/ cutting assembly (5) mounted on three carriages (28,33,35) to allow displacement of the welding/cutting heads along x-y-z axes (one axis being vertical) by means of three servomotors (31,35,39) each equipped with a servo loop. Data, defining the two pipes and the weld, are entered into a computer which calculates, for each point on the curve intersecting the two pipes, three variables (xo,yo,zo) corresponding to coordinates measured along the three carriage displacement axes and two variables (alphao,betao) corresponding to the orientation of the pipes about the two pivot axes (XX1,YY1). The computer transmits these consigned values to the servomotors which automatically displace the carriages, while maintaining the welding/cutting heads vertical, and which automatically position the pipes.
