2-Hydroxypyridines of formula (I) are produced by reacting 2-pyridinecarboxylic acid N-oxides of formula (II) with lower aliphatic carboxylic anhydrides (III) and a tert. amine (IV) and hydrolysing the reaction prod. R=H, -COOH, 1-8C alkyl or aryl; n=1-4. - Pref. (III) is acetic anhydride (IIIA) and (IV) is triethylamine (IVA). The ratio of (IV)/(II) is 1-20:1 (5-2:1) and the reaction temp. 0-50 (20-30) deg.C. Reaction may be carried out in the presence of a solvent (e.g. toluene, petroleum ether, CCl4, ethyl acetate, acetic acid, acetonitrile, etc..).
