Abstract

EP--65078 A Compsn. comprises (a) acrylonitrile, acrylamide and/or acrylic acid and (b) a borane cpd. contg. at least one -B-H gp. and consisting of borohydrides and complexes of B hydrides. When (a) is acrylamide and/or acrylic acid and contains a sufficient quantity of a metallic ion or cpd. to form an initiator system in the presence of (b), the amt. of inhibitor is increased to prevent premature polymerisation of the compsn. When (a) is free of metallic ion or cpd., (a) is present as a 5-20 wt.% soln. in water and is free of added inhibitor. - The compsn. provides an inexpensive and convenient method for improving the polymerisability of poorly polymerisable (a). Acrolein content of acrylonitrile is greatly reduced. Water soluble polymers having higher mol. wts. and reduced insolubles can be produced.
