Abstract

The multi-cylinder Diesel engine has at least one cylinder having the facility to be operated as a motor or as an air compressor to provide both engine braking and to supply compressed air during braking of the vehicle. - The engine has motoring inlet and exhaust poppet valves operated by a camshaft actuating hydraulic tappets. An additional poppet valve is fitted in the head, opening into the engine cylinder, and is actuated through a hydraulic tappet responding to a piston mounted on the opposite side of the rocker arm to the pushrods operating the valves of the normal cylinders. Hydraulic fluid is drawn from a reservoir through solenoid valves to supply both tappets. The solenoid valves are operated in response to the air pressure in the vehicle's braking system and to a deceleration detector. The sequential opening and closing of the extra valve is hydraulically in synchronism with the cycle of the other cylinders. - A switch selectively operable to disconnect and connect the hydraulic device enables and disables a fuel oil injector such that the switch disconnects the hydraulic device and enables the injector to operate the preselected cylinder as an engine cylinder. The switch connects the hydraulic device and disables the injector to operate the preselected cylinder as a compressor cylinder.
