Coal, esp. mineral coal is fed downwards to fill a chamber which has longitudinal walls heated by gas burners. Each end of the chambers is closed by a door carrying distance pieces to which a coking plate is fixed so heat can be supplied from the two coking plates to the coal in the chamber. The spaces between the coking plates and the doors are used to collect and remove the gases evolved by the coal. The coking plates are pref. heated; and the distance pieces pref. form gas collection channels creating vortices in the evolved gases. The coking plates are pref. bolted to the distance pieces. The charge of coal in the chamber is heated uniformly, esp. where the chamber has doors over 6 metres in height.
