Abstract

The suspension contains by wt. (a) 25% min. of MgO with a citric acid activity (CAC) above 200 seconds; (b) 2-25%, w.r.t. the wt. of (a), of P2O5 added as one or more of the phosphates of Ca, Mg, Al, ammonium polyphosphate, and/or H3PO4. The max. concn. of MgO in the suspension is 0.6 g/ccm; and the suspension does not settle in periods of up to 10 h. - The pref. suspension employs as cpd. (a) a mixt. of 50% MgO with CAC = 1500-3000 seconds, and 50% MgO with CAC 20-40 seconds. The suspension may also contain 0.1-0.15% boron and 5-10% TiO2, both w.r.t. the wt. of (a). The suspension is applied to Si steel sheet, which is then annealed to form a glass film while attaining the desired magnetic properties. - A high proportion of inactive MgO can be used in the suspension, which is stable and does not settle out rapidly. The CAC test is described in US3841925. DEAB- DE3218821 C Aq. slurry of magnesia for formation of insulating glass film on oriented Si steel sheet contains at least 25 wt.% of Mg oxide with a citric acid activity of more than 200 sec. and a phosphate-contg. cpd. selected from Ca phosphates, water-sol. ammonium polyphosphate, Mg phosphates, phosphoric acid and mixtures of these, in a proportion of 2-25 wt.%, calculated as P2O5. The magnesia is in a concn. of up to 0.6 g/cm3 and the slurry is stable against settling out for up to 10 hrs.
