Abstract

The cable crimping device is suitable for use with stranded cables of copper, aluminium or their alloys and surface coated strands. Ultrasonic vibrations are generated during or after the formation of the crimp to allow an improved electric contact with reduced impairment by oxide or other impurity films. The deformable metal eyelet crimp lug (4) is positioned on an anvil (5) bearing against a length of bared wires (3). Two flaps are folded over the wire, and on the bared section, and one the insulation. The crimping tool head (6) is fitted to an ultrasonic transducer. The recess in the head is shaped to fold the lug into a doubled clamp. The ultrasonic waves are applied to the wire perpendicular to the direction of applied force (F). The effect of the vibration is to increase the surface area of contact and to minimise voids in the sheath of strands.
